Long-serving radio presenter and programmer Les Thompson doesn't dish too much sludge on the egocentric Sydney broadcasters he worked with over three decades but the anecdotes in his letters, Hello Ego! , are revealing just the same.

For instance, there's his description of civic opposites George Negus and Alan Jones in a uttered stoush outside a 2UE studio in 1986, soon after Kerry Packer bought the level. Negus had taken issue with Jones over his strident editorials as to white minority rule in South Africa. The soft-cover describes Jones hollering: "You shouldn't believe everything you informed entertain,” before escaping into the studio.

Or some years earlier, when Thompson arrived at toil to find 2UE management in uproar over the strong stench of stale sauce emanating through the building. It turned out that 2UE colleague John Laws had slipped in to upon midnight-to-dawn host John Kerr in the studio for a tipple or two between songs.

The all-night session ended with Laws pouring Jack Daniels into an air-conditioning escape.

WMCS axing of Cassandra, McNally creates vacuum

It's only a minute exaggeration to say that there is no one working in radio who hasn't been fired.

It happens so often that it's only news when it does. Formats change, ratings dip and people become unessential.

It happens at big commercial stations all the time. But when it creates a vacuum in a recess that no one else is filling, the toll affects listeners as well.

Such is the case with the firing last week of Joel McNally and Cassandra Cassandra, co-hosts of the WMCS-AM (1290) morning talk show, from a bus station and a program aimed at Milwaukee's African-American community.

Cassandra had been at the site for 18 years, starting as a part-time disc jockey and making the transmutation to the morning talk and call-in show 10 years ago. She was joined by big-hearted gadfly McNally four years ago.

She and McNally, a former Milwaukee Newspaper reporter who's now a syndicated columnist, were blindsided by the move.

"I was definitely surprised," said Cassandra. "I realized the instal had been hit by the economy like everyone else. But I was not aware" of plans to send packing the pair until she and McNally were told after Friday's show that it was their final scatter.
